Character & History

Where Louisville Began — 140 Years in the Making

Old Town Louisville is where the city started. In 1877 coal was discovered and the Welch Mine opened. A local landowner named Louis Nawatny platted his land and named the town after himself — and the name stuck along with his pronunciation, which is Lewis-ville, not like the Kentucky version. The city incorporated in 1882, and at its peak it operated more than 30 active coal mines, including the Acme Mine, which ran directly beneath the town’s streets. Those underground tunnels still exist today, a geological reminder that the streets above were built on what came before.

The historic core runs five square blocks along Main, Front, and Pine Streets and contains more than 100 businesses along with the Louisville History Museum, City Hall, and the Public Library. Front Street was once home to 13 saloons — Louisville held the distinction of being the only “wet town” in Boulder County until 1969. Today, 740 Front stands as the last of those original bars, operating continuously since 1904 under the same tavern license and designated a City of Louisville Historic Landmark. Both CNN and Money magazine have named Louisville one of the country’s top places to live, and the energy of Old Town is the reason most people cite when explaining why.

Homes in Old Town sit on narrow, tree-shaded lots that follow the original 1882 townsite plat. Most of the housing stock is historic miners’ cottages and Craftsman bungalows, many updated with modern interiors while preserving their street-facing facades. Some lots include alley access — a practical asset for garage additions or accessory dwelling units. Infill new construction has added contemporary homes to several blocks in recent years. The result is a streetscape that feels genuinely accumulated rather than curated — 140 years of decisions layered on top of each other in the most interesting way possible.

Location & Access

Boulder in 10 Minutes, Denver in 25 — Everything Else on Foot

Old Town Louisville sits at the physical and cultural center of the city, with Main Street as its axis and most daily life genuinely accessible on foot or by bike. For commuters, US-36 is reachable via the McCaslin interchange about 5 minutes away — Boulder is 10 miles northwest, downtown Denver roughly 25 miles southeast. The RTD Flatiron Flyer express bus operates from the McCaslin Park-and-Ride, offering all-stops and express patterns for Boulder commuters who prefer not to drive.

Day-to-day errands run easily without a car. King Soopers on South Boulder Road handles grocery runs. The Coal Creek Trail, accessible from multiple points in the neighborhood, links walkers and cyclists south to Lafayette and west toward Superior and the broader regional trail network.
